The convent of Rosarian Sisters at Tewatte was established some 50 years ago making it the first of its kind in the southern part of the island. The Roasarians, which is the first indigenous congregation in Asia, came into being in response to a wish of Pius XI Pope of Missions encouraging the establishment of indigenous contemplative congregations. The courage of Rev Thomas to shoulder this herculean task saw the birth of the congregation for men in Tholagatti, Jaffna with just two young disciples of God.  In 1928, this new order was christened as Rosarians. The Rosarian order of nuns was established in 1950 after three failed earlier attempts. The first convent was housed in Vasavilan, a village close to Tholagatti.

Labour and calm life prevails every inch of this land. Adhering to strict guidelines set by the founder, Rev B A Thomas, the Sisters take every effort to lead a contemplative life in an oasis of silence with slight amendments for being practical. The Nuns' lives are not only confined to prayers but they do also engage themselves in cottages industries such as candle, syrup and jam making, cultivation, animal husbandry and community work. Their lives are filled with labour done in God's service and prayers and meditation offered in praise of God.  There is no utterance of even a word unless it serves a purpose.  Every thought, word and deed is only for the boundless glory of God.  There in lies the wellspring of serenity and tranquility that surrounds the Tewatte Rosarian Convent.
